A former Executive Secretary , National Universities Commission, Prof Peter Okebukola , on Thursday pleaded with the Academic Staff Union of Universities to call off the ongoing strike in public universities in the country .
He appealed to the striking lecturers to embrace dialogue, adding that the Minister of Education , Mallam Adamu Adamu , had been working towards resolving the crisis.
Okebukola spoke while delivering a lecture at the 1 st Kwara State Education Lecture at KWASU in Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State .
The event was also used to unveil an award for administrative excellence to KWASU ’s Vice- Chancellor, Prof Abdulrasheed Na ’Allah, from Global University Network for Innovation in Africa .
Okebukola said , “This is an appeal , that dialogue should be explored to the fullest in resolving the matter and the strike called off to provide an ambience environment for dialogue . You can see the genuineness and commitment of the Minister of Education , Mallam Adamu Adamu , to restoring the glory of our educational system.
“ He is the first to ensure that a state of emergency was declared in the education sector . This means that he is aware of what ASUU is clamouring for and he has started taking steps to address many of the issues .”
He said that to achieve the targets of the declared state of emergency in the education sector, the National Assembly should pass a bill . He said the bill should be based on the document approved by National Economic Council .
