-David De Gea is yet to sign a new deal with Manchester United
– His current contract with the Red Devils will expire next summer
– Mourinho has now turned to Jordan Pickford to replace the Spaniard
Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has asked the club’s eggheads to line up a move for Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to replace unsettled David De Gea at Old Trafford.
De Gea’s curren contract with United is due to expire next summer, although the club has an option of extending it for a further one year.
However, according to Metro UK, the Red Devils are hesitant of triggering the one-year extension for fear of signalling to potential suitors that they are not in a position of persuading the shot-stopper to stay.
Top European clubs including Juventus are said to be eyeing a move for De Gea should United fail to prevail upon the Spaniard to commit his future with the Manchester club.
As such, Mourinho has urged United to sign Pickford as De Gea’s replacement, who, according to the UK Sun, the Portuguese tactician has admiration for.
The former Chelsea manager is also said to have the club’s staff support over his assessment of Pickford’s skills and ability.
The English goalkeeper has been impressive at Everton this season, having arrived at Goodinson Park in 2017 from Sunderland.
The 24-year-old has also established himself as Gareth Southgate’s top choice between the stands, effectively deposing Joe Hart from the position in the England national team.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has reportedly stalled on signing new contract at Old Trafford.
The 27-year-old has been superb for the Red Devils since he joined them in the summer of 2011 from Atletico Madrid.
